PROUD MEMBERS OF JUNIOR A TIER 1 HOCKEY

Briar McNaney

Originally from Merritt, British Columbia, Briar McNaney has spent his entire life immersed in the game of hockey. A true student of the sport, McNaney played for five years at the junior level and gained a unique, well-rounded perspective by playing every position on the ice, which also includes goaltender (though he did not play goalie at the junior level). That versatility has shaped his approach to player evaluation and development throughout his coaching career.

McNaney began coaching at just 21 years old, working in minor hockey in Merritt for two seasons. From ages 23 to 26, he served as an Associate Coach, continuing to develop his knowledge, communication skills, and ability to support players at different stages of their development.

At 26, McNaney earned his first opportunity as a Head Coach before moving into an Assistant Coach role in the SJHL, gaining experience in a highly competitive junior environment. He later returned to British Columbia to serve as Head Coach for the Nelson Leafs for parts of three seasons.

McNaney reconnected with Coastal Tsunami Head Coach and General Manager Brad Wingfield and was invited to evaluate players for the organization. His hockey IQ, work ethic, and eye for talent quickly stood out, leading to his role as Director of Player Personnel & Development.

In his current role, McNaney spends significant time scouting on the road, identifying and evaluating prospective players, assisting with recruitment and trade discussions, and supporting staff and players in practices, player skill development on and off the ice, and individual video sessions. His diverse playing background, coaching experience, and commitment to growth make him a key part of the Coastal Tsunami’s long-term vision.
