It was another busy week for the Tsunami as the boys prepared for two big matchups over the weekend, one against the league-leading Richmond Sockeyes, and another against the Burnaby Steelers, who currently sit eight points behind the Tsunami in the standings.
On January 10, the Tsunami hosted the Richmond Sockeyes at the GACC for an exciting and hard-fought game. Hometown star Lucas Lekakis opened the scoring and earned a well-deserved second star of the game. There’s always a bit of nerves when facing Richmond, but the Tsunami held their own, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats every time they pressed into the Richmond zone. A special shout-out also goes to Austin Kindrat, who was stellar in net all night, making several incredible saves. Despite a strong effort, the Tsunami came up short, falling 6–3.
The following night, on January 11, the boys hit the road to take on the Burnaby Steelers. These two teams have gone back and forth all season, delivering some great games… and a few epic shootouts. Six goals were scored between the first and second periods, and a tightly contested third period left the game tied 3–3 at the end of regulation. After five minutes of overtime failed to produce a winner, the game headed to a shootout. Goaltender Brayden Burrows was on fire, stopping every shot he faced. When Tsunami captain Reegan Kominko stepped up and found the back of the net, the Tsunami secured their first win of the month with a 4–3 shootout victory.
Looking ahead, the Tsunami are on the road this week, with no home games scheduled. Fans can catch the action as the team takes on the Ridge Meadows Flames on January 16. The Tsunami return home on January 24 to face the Langley Trappers, and don’t forget, it’s Country Music Night! Break out your hats and boots and come ready to dance.
See you soon!
