TSUNAMI NAME LEADERSHIP GROUP AHEAD OF 2024-2025 PJHL SEASON

Giancarlo Nadeau

Days before the regular season begins for the newest franchise in the Pacific Junior Hockey League, the leadership group for the Coastal Tsunami has been announced. The leadership group consists of a forward, a defenceman, and a goaltender.

Nick Peters (Powell River, BC) will wear the ‘C,’ while Eric Stinson (Sechelt, BC) and Nate Hughes (Nanaimo, BC) will both wear an ‘A.’

Peters (5’8”, 192 pounds) spent the past three seasons in the VIJHL with the Campbell River Storm. He posted a 2.46 GAA, .914 SV%, and five shutouts in 94 regular season games over the past three seasons. Peters, a 2024 VIJHL all-star, played nine BCHL games with the Powell River Kings.

This will be the first time Peters will serve as the captain of a team he has played on. He held leadership roles the past two seasons, playing junior hockey but never with a ‘C’ on his jersey. It’s an honour, and we have a great leadership group going ahead here,” he added.

Nate Hughes (6’4”, 208 pounds) spent last season with the Oceanside Generals and North Okanagan Knights – now Quesnel River Rush. The Nanaimo product had two points (1-1) in 24 regular-season games with the Generals and two points (0-2) in 10 regular-season games with the Knights.

Hughes claims that being an alternate captain is a tremendous honour. This will mark his third season of junior hockey, and he hopes this season will be good for his team. He also admits that being awarded a letter was something he was thinking about. “Being one of the older guys on the team was in the back of my mind,” he said. Being positive is something he tries his best to do. “Being a positive player is something I pride myself on, and I lift my teammates up when they’re down.”

Eric Stinson (6’2”, 178 pounds) spent the past two seasons with the Kerry Park Islanders, scoring 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points in 79 regular-season contests. The VIJHL all-star defender has experience in the BCHL and will immediately impact the team’s backend.

“We just had a meeting this morning, so that is when I found out, and I was pretty excited to get one,” explained Stinson. Stinson also took the time to praise newly-appointed captain Nick Peters by saying, “I’m not surprised he was given the C. He’s one of the best goalies around and an unreal guy.”

Tsunami General Manager and Head Coach Brad Wingfield adds, “As an expansion franchise with no previous history, we watched through training camp for true leaders to reveal themselves. After ongoing discussions between staff, these guys stood out to us and made us confident that the time was now to name them,”.

The coaching staff is still looking for two more alternate captains, who will be named when the time is right.

The Tsunami open their inaugural season with two games on the road this weekend, visiting Abbotsford and North Vancouver. They will play their first game on the Sunshine Coast on September 14.
