The Coastal Tsunami are committed to supporting players and families by providing clear, informative resources to help guide decisions around hockey, education, and long-term career planning – both during and after a player’s time in junior hockey.
Our mission is centered on building strong foundations for life beyond the rink, recognizing that every athlete’s path is unique. Through the support of team leadership and designated education resources, players are encouraged to explore a variety of academic and vocational opportunities that align with their individual goals.
These opportunities may include pathways to U.S. colleges, Canadian universities, trade schools, and other post-secondary or career options. Players are supported in creating personalized portfolios that reflect their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
With guidance from coaches, management, and education support staff, players have access to the tools, templates, and information needed to begin meaningful career planning – whether their future lies in hockey, academics, or the workforce.
At the Coastal Tsunami, we believe success is defined not only by what happens on the ice, but by how prepared our players are for the next chapter of their lives. Our goal is to ensure every player has the support and resources they need to move forward with confidence – wherever their journey takes them.
WHL Pathway
The Western Hockey League (WHL) provides elite young hockey players with the opportunity to develop at the highest level of junior hockey in Western Canada, while still prioritizing academic success.
Being at the highest level of Hockey Canada–sanctioned hockey, the Coastal Tsunami currently sit at the highest level available for players to affiliate with WHL teams, making the program a critical development pathway for athletes aspiring to compete at the major junior level.
Throughout the season, each WHL team works with dedicated education advisors to track academic progress and support players in meeting their educational goals. Players receive financial assistance for education-related expenses such as high school tutoring and post-secondary coursework while competing in the league.
While the on-ice goal is to compete for a WHL Championship and the Memorial Cup, academic achievement remains a core focus. League-wide education standards ensure players complete high school on time and are supported in pursuing post-secondary education.
The WHL is recognized as one of the leading providers of hockey-related educational support in Canada and awards hundreds of scholarships annually to current and graduating players.
WHL Scholarship highlights:
-
Players earn one year of scholarship funding for each season played in the WHL
-
Scholarships cover tuition, textbooks, and compulsory fees
-
Funding can be used at a post-secondary institution of the player’s choice in North America
-
A four-year WHL career can result in four full years of scholarship support
Since 1993, WHL clubs have awarded thousands of scholarships, representing a significant investment in player education. Many WHL graduates continue their hockey careers at the university level, particularly within Canadian college and university programs.
